Jet2 has been forced to issue a warning to UK tourists planning to head to Spain. The airline has alerted people to possible delays due to strike action which is affecting Spain.

Currently, Air Traffic Control workers affiliated with the CCOO and USCA unions at 16 Spanish airports are on strike, affecting some of Spain’s main airports.

Disruptions to flights have been minimal so far due to what unions are calling “abusive” minimum services that workers are legally required to carry out.

“They are cornering us, and this isn’t going to end well,” said Gregorio Claros, spokesperson for the USCA union and air traffic controller in Seville. “We could continue all the way through Easter week or maybe even summer.”

The air traffic controllers in the 16 affected airports – A Coruna, Alicante-Elche, Castellon, Cuatro Vientos, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, Ibiza, Jerez, Lanzarote, La Palma, Lleida, Murcia, Sabadell, Sevilla, Valencia and Vigo – are all working for private companies as opposed to being employed by the Spanish state.

The strikes have caused Jet2 to issue a warning to anyone planning to head to the country. A Jet2 spokesperson said: “We wanted to let you know that industrial strike action is taking place Monday 27th February, supported by the Air Traffic Service in Spain. This means that flights operating to Alicante, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote (Arrecife) may be delayed.

“If you’re affected, rest assured we’ll try to keep any disruption to a minimum. Please arrive at the airport at least two hours before your departure time. Check-in closes 40 minutes before a flight’s scheduled departure time.

“For up-to-date information, please check this web page again, as well as the departure screens and listen out for any announcements. We’ll have you on your way as soon as we can.”

Strike by Swissport at Alicante Airport

Workers for one of the main ground-handling companies at Alicante-Elche Airport, Swissport, have announced strike action that could impact travellers in addition to the strikes that have been taking place by Air Traffic Controllers on Mondays throughout February.

Swissport workers will go on strike from Monday 27 February, coincidentally the last day of strike action by Air Traffic Controllers during this campaign, unless an agreement can be reached.

The Swissport company is one of those in charge of handling services, baggage and airport services, which, at the Alicante terminal, handles British Airways, Ryanair and Easyjet, amongst others.

The strike will begin on February 27 with a 24 -hour strike, to continue on Tuesday 28 and Thursday, March 2, every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday until March 13. The strikes will be 24 hours on all these days.

The unions representing workers state that they have been in negotiations since the start of February, but the company has not shown any good faith, which has subsequently led to the action announced.

The company respected the right to strike, but called for a minimum service of 100%, which the unions disagreed with, and are therefore saying that the levels will be 0%, although the actual minimum levels will be set before next week.
